The Koshu grape, cultivated at the foot of Mt. Fuji, has been grown in Japan for over a thousand years. It is believed to have traveled from Europe along the Silk Road through China before reaching Japan. Modern DNA analysis confirms that Koshu grapes indeed contain European grape lineage.
In Yamanashi Prefecture, under the initiative of the local government, four merchants established the Great Japan Yamanashi Wine Company, adopting Western corporate systems introduced during the Meiji era.
Two young men were later sent to France to study viticulture and winemaking — the first Japanese to do so — laying the foundation for Japan’s modern wine industry.
